This 1981 version is by far the best interpretation, updating the story to 1981 but apart from that remaining faithful to Wyndham's original story. It had some great actors like Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox but they were wasted on a cliched script, which like the 1962 version bore little relation to Wyndham's writing. In 2009 the BBC made a version which was even worse than the 1962 version. As far as I know, there have been three screen adaptions of the book: the 1962 version was a tacky Hollywood type script with the then obligatory American protagonist, which has little relation to the text. I saw this 1981 version when it came out and have just watched it again.
I am a John Wyndham fan and The Day of the Triffids is my favourite novel. I agree with the previous reviewer, Chris Nash.
